He lived at Carr House for some years, he had a south facing first floor room over the porch from where he made his observations. He was curate of St Michael's church, Much Hoole, Lancs where a later rector, Robert Brickell, wrote a small book 'A Chapter of Romance in Science' about Horrocks observations and erected memorials to Horrocks, a stained glass window an a large sundial over the south door.

He was the first to see the Transit of Venus in 1639 which he had predicted. He also worked on the tides.
