born: 2 August 1820 County Carlow, Ireland
died: 4 December 1893 Hindhead, Surrey.
He is buried in St. Bartholomew's, Haslemere where he had built his retirement home in 1885.

He suceeded Faraday as superintendent of the Royal Institution and was interested in radiant heat of air, the scattering of light by particles of dust in the atmosphere and the movement of glaciers in the Alps. He was also interested in science education, wrote many popular science books and was elected president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1874.
