He was an author of the famous thriller The Thirty-Nine Steps and
other novels set during the time of the 1st World War.
He later became Director of Information for the Government
from 1916 - 1917 when he lived in London, for some time at 76 Portland Place.
He was Governor General of Canada from 1935 until his death. He is buried in
the churchyard of St Thomas of Canterbury, Elsfield, Oxon.
